The Character

Lady Agatha is the Dowager Marchioness of Aylesbury — mother to Lord Alexander Nevill and a woman whose quiet authority has shaped the Aylesbury family for a generation. Elegant, perceptive, and guided by a deep love for her children, she watches the season’s developments with a knowing eye.

Unlike the scheming mothers of the ton, Lady Agatha does not push or plot. She observes. Her son’s guarded heart is no mystery to her, and she has watched him retreat behind the walls of duty and disappointment long enough to recognise when something — or someone — begins to change him.

When Nevill speaks of Miss Berrington, Lady Agatha hears what he does not say. A mother’s intuition, sharpened by years of reading her son’s silences, tells her that this particular debutante may prove unlike any he has encountered before.
